On May 30th, the Shandong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism held a highly successful tourism promotion event at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel in Jangchung-ng, Seoul. The event, which took place from 16:00 to 19:00, aimed to introduce the remarkable tourism products of Shandong Province to the Korean market under the brand name ‘Friendly Shandong’.
Wang Chunsaeng, Deputy Director of the Shandong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, eloquently described Shandong Province, stating, “Shandong is renowned as the cultural capital of East Asia, with cities like Qingdao, Jinan, and Weifang comparable to the cultural gems of Jeju, Busan, and Incheon in Korea. As the birthplace of many esteemed sages, Shandong has nurtured rich Confucian and Taoist cultures, leading to the proliferation of numerous captivating tourist attractions.
Moreover, its proximity to the lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Yellow Sea, and the Bohai Sea has fostered a vibrant maritime culture. Shandong boasts an impressive collection of 8 intangible cultural heritage masterpieces and 186 national-level intangible cultural heritage items.”
He further emphasized, “With a coastline spanning 3,345 kilometers, accounting for 1/6 of the national coastline, and a maritime area encompassing 159,500 square kilometers, along with 589 nearby islands, Shandong Province’s coastal cities such as Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Yulian, Dongying, and Weifang are interconnected like glistening pearls, creating a truly unique and breathtaking coastal scenery.”
Zhang Ruyu, Director of the Seoul Office of the China National Tourist Office, delivered an address emphasizing the inseparable bond between China and Korea as neighboring countries and cooperative partners. He highlighted the historical significance and cultural richness of Shandong Province, stating, “Shandong, as the birthplace of Confucianism, has given rise to esteemed figures such as Confucius, Mencius, Sunzi, Gongzi, and Noban. It proudly boasts four world cultural heritage sites, including Mount Tai, Shang Dynasty Ruins, Jiaolai River, and Daming Lake.”
Director Zhang added, “Shandong is an idyllic destination for indulging in the splendor of mountains, beaches, and eco-tourism. We eagerly anticipate the growing interest of Korean tourists in Shandong’s tourism offerings. By experiencing the beauty of its mountains and rivers, as well as immersing themselves in its rich history and culture, visitors can forge unforgettable memories.”
Kim Young-hwan, Director of the Seoul Tourism and Sports Bureau, expressed his congratulations with optimism, stating, “As we approach a time when exchanges between our two countries, hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, will resume in earnest, it is important to highlight the deep ties between Shandong Province and Seoul.
