The purpose of the conference was to engage in discussions regarding flight schedules for the 2023 winter season.
As flight operations continue to expand, there is a heightened interest in the potential impact of increased seat availability on airfare reduction.

This recognition further solidifies Seoul’s position as a top leisure travel destination, drawing the attention of travelers from around the world.
The Leisure Lifestyle Awards, presented by Global Traveler, a renowned luxury business travel magazine with a monthly print circulation of 550,000 and 2 million monthly online page views, celebrate exceptional leisure destinations across the globe. In the previous year, Seoul achieved an impressive second place, with Taiwan taking the top spot, cementing its reputation as a premier leisure city in Asia.
Amid the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization have worked tirelessly to promote Seoul’s vibrant lifestyle and diverse attractions to international audiences. Collaborating closely with BTS, the globally acclaimed music group serving as honorary tourism ambassadors, they have successfully showcased the city’s unique leisure tourism offerings.
Their continuous efforts have yielded remarkable results:
In May of last year, Seoul hosted the highly anticipated Seoul Festa 2023, a grand event that captivated visitors with a multitude of exciting attractions and entertainment options. From thrilling K-pop concerts to immersive K-culture experiences and a breathtaking Han River drone light show, the festival offered an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
Recognizing the growing interest in hiking tourism, the Seoul Downtown Hiking Center was established at the entrance of Bukhansan Mountain in 2022. Furthermore, plans are underway to open a second center near Inwangsan and Bukaksan to cater to the increasing demand.
To enhance the convenience of foreign visitors exploring Seoul’s charm, the Seoul Tourism Organization introduced the Discover Seoul Pass—a dedicated pass exclusively available to foreigners. This pass grants access to major Seoul tourist spots, K-culture experiences, and engaging leisure activities, ensuring an enriching and seamless travel experience.
Seoul’s allure as a must-visit destination has been rapidly spreading, captivating not only Japanese tourists due to its proximity but also travelers from around the world. In 2022, Seoul ranked an impressive fourth among the most searched travel destinations worldwide, according to a survey conducted by Airbnb. Additionally, Booking.com revealed that Seoul was the only overseas destination to secure a place within the top 10 most searched travel destinations by Japanese tourists, further emphasizing its appeal and popularity.
The prestigious recognition from Time magazine as one of the best places to visit in 2022 further affirms Seoul’s status as a city of global interest, capturing the attention of travelers worldwide.
A representative from the Seoul Tourism Organization expressed their delight and gratitude for the award, highlighting their commitment to expanding Seoul’s tourism offerings. The summer sun blazed relentlessly, casting its intense radiance upon the land. Even before May drew to a close, the scorching heat began to wrap itself around the earth, refusing to dissipate in the wind’s embrace.
Under the sweltering heat, every living creature seemed to struggle, gasping for breath, as if caught in a never-ending race against time. Memories of the refreshing spring days were swiftly overshadowed by the relentless blaze that engulfed the world.
In the midst of June, as the threshold of autumn beckoned on the far side of the globe, I received a message that would change the course of my life: “Your journey to India awaits.”
There was an inherent mystique in the name itself—India—a place that had captivated my imagination for so long. It whispered promises of enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and profound self-discovery. Although the prospect of embarking on this adventure excited me, doubts crept into my mind like shadows creeping across a desolate landscape. Could I endure such a harsh climate? Could I truly experience the essence of India under such scorching temperatures?
Pushing aside my momentary hesitation, I mustered my resolve and replied, “Very well. When shall we depart?” The response came swiftly, “The itinerary will commence in early July.”
The kind-hearted advice I received informed me that the average temperature would reach 38 degrees, with scorching highs of 42-43 degrees. Instead of deterrence, an odd exhilaration took root in my heart. It was as if the promise of this challenging journey stirred a peculiar thrill within me, reminding me of the depths of my own longing and the vulnerability of my spirit.
“Should anyone wish to join me, please speak up. I will cover the expenses, minimizing the financial burden to just the round-trip airfare.”
While the idea of embarking on a solitary expedition often appealed to me, this particular journey held a unique significance. It entwined a pilgrimage to sacred Buddhist sites with a cultural exploration of the enigmatic Indian landscape. Thus, I felt compelled to seek companionship for this extraordinary venture.
Fate seemed to conspire in my favor, for I already had two potential fellow travelers in mind. A monk, whose serene presence had touched the depths of my soul, and a fellow believer with whom I shared a profound spiritual connection at the temple. Together, we resolved to set forth on this unforgettable expedition, our hearts intertwined with hope, uncertainty, and a shared yearning for transformation.
The preparations for our journey commenced in customary fashion—validating passports, securing airline tickets, and ensuring the presence of a trusty credit card. A modest sum of emergency funds found their place amidst my belongings. A day before our departure, I diligently gathered the essentials, performing the ritual of packing my bag akin to a well-practiced routine.
As much as I yearned to indulge in the convenience of instant meals—astonishingly advanced in their development—I firmly resisted the temptation. To embark on a journey meant to immerse oneself in a foreign culture, one must willingly embrace the local cuisine, savoring it joyfully, even if it did not align with familiar tastes. How else could I truly experience the vibrant tapestry of Indian culture?
If I were to encounter pungent spices or unfamiliar condiments, I resolved to approach each meal with gratitude. Rather than resisting or recoiling from the flavors, I sought to appreciate the rich history and deep-rooted traditions imbued within every dish. Traveling with preconceived notions about food would be akin to donning a protective suit, shielding myself from the very essence of exploration.
With my bag neatly packed, containing only the bare essentials—my meager belongings and camera—I stood on the precipice of the unknown. As I completed the departure formalities and settled into my seat, neatly arranged by the gate, a sudden surge of emotions flooded my being. Doubts and uncertainties collided with an overwhelming sense of anticipation. What lay beyond the horizon? What connections and destinies awaited me in the land of ancient traditions and timeless wisdom?
My heart ached with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, much like the delicate dance of a pendulum, forever oscillating between extremes. Little did I know that this journey, beyond the realm of a mere physical pilgrimage, would unravel the very essence of my being.

Director Shimizu Yuichi Sets Ambitious Goals for Japan’s Tourism in Korea
Recently, the Japan National Tourism Organization’s Korean Office welcomed its new Director, Shimizu Yuichi. With Japan continuously grabbing attention as a top destination, particularly after the reopening of the tourism sector following the COVID-19 pandemic, an exclusive interview was conducted to delve into the world of Korean travelers and their experiences.
In a conversation with Korea Travel News, Director Shimizu Yuichi shared insights into his career journey and shed light on the factors driving Japan’s popularity among Korean outbound tourists.
Director Shimizu Yuichi’s extensive background in national and local government tourism policies and regional development projects spans over a decade. Notably, his impactful experiences in Okinawa and Tohoku have shaped his current endeavors. He expressed his ardent desire to share the pride and accomplishments of the people he has encountered throughout Japan with the Korean audience.
Japan’s unrivaled position as the most sought-after destination for Korean outbound tourists can be attributed to several key factors. Director Shimizu Yuichi highlighted the rapid recovery of international air routes between Korea and Japan, with a substantial 80% route recovery rate as of May 2023 compared to 2019, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Additionally, the continued depreciation of the yen has played a significant role in attracting Korean tourists. Furthermore, the psychological recovery of Korean travelers, who have faced prolonged travel restrictions, and the success of tailored initiatives like the Visit Japan (VJ) project have further bolstered Japan’s appeal.
Despite the trend of more Korean tourists visiting Japan than Japanese tourists visiting Korea, Director Shimizu Yuichi acknowledged the existence of certain challenges. He noted that, in the short term, varying levels of concern about the novel coronavirus infection between Koreans and Japanese might contribute to this disparity. Since taking office in Seoul, he has personally observed the contrasting levels of caution towards COVID-19 among Koreans and Japanese. While Japan has relaxed its quarantine measures since October 2022, allowing international travel to resume, there is still a prevalent perception among the Japanese that COVID-19 remains a significant concern.
When asked about future marketing initiatives and promotional plans, Director Shimizu Yuichi unveiled a comprehensive strategy. The ongoing Visit Japan (VJ) project will continue, with a special emphasis on “Sustainable Tourism” as the common theme for the next three years. Within the framework of sustainable tourism, key focus areas will include “Consumption Generation” and “Promotion of Local Tourism.” Additionally, the upcoming Osaka-Kansai World Expo 2025 will be a prominent event to promote. Director Shimizu Yuichi also expressed a commitment to fostering improved Korea-Japan relations across various fields, including tourism, as Japan enters a new era.
In a closing remark, Director Shimizu Yuichi shared his determination to contribute wholeheartedly towards a prosperous future, quoting, “Even if we know that dawn is approaching, if we don’t open our eyes, it is still the depths of the night.”
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Director Shimizu for graciously providing thoughtful responses despite his demanding schedule. His demonstrated understanding and preparedness for the Korean market, even within a short period, inspire confidence in the future of the Japan National Tourism Organization’s Korean Office under his leadership.
The captivating allure of Taiwan’s tourism has sparked a surge of interest among Korean travelers, with Taiwan claiming the top spot as their preferred destination from January to March 2023. Seizing this momentum, the Taiwan Ministry of Transportation’s Tourism Bureau organized a two-day event on June 16th and 17th in Korea, consisting of a B2B tourism briefing and a B2C tourism roadshow. Through these initiatives, the bureau aimed to demonstrate its commitment to surpassing the milestone of 6 million international tourists to Taiwan and provide Seoul residents with an immersive experience of Taiwan’s vibrant and diverse offerings.
In 2019, Taiwan welcomed over 1.24 million Korean tourists, solidifying its position as the fourth most popular destination among Korean travelers. The upward trend continued in the first quarter of 2023, with a remarkable influx of 140,000 Korean visitors, securing Taiwan as the leading source market. According to Open Survey’s “2022 Travel Trend Report,” the primary factors influencing Korean travelers’ choice of overseas destinations after the COVID-19 outbreak are “short travel distances” and a growing demand for “convenient travel experiences resembling domestic trips.” Consequently, searches related to “Taiwan travel” have witnessed a substantial increase since the second half of 2022, particularly among the younger generation.
During the “36th Korea-Taiwan Tourism Exchange Meeting,” Taiwan and Korea jointly declared their ambition to attract 3 million mutual visitors. Under the leadership of the Director-General of the Taiwan Ministry of Transportation’s Tourism Bureau and the Chairman of the Taiwan Tourism Association, a Taiwan Tourism Briefing was held on June 16th at the Novotel Ambassador Seoul Yongsan Hotel.
The event brought together representatives from 42 organizations and 69 officials representing Taiwan’s central and local governments, airlines, travel agencies, hotels, and other tourism-related industries. Over 50 industry professionals, including representatives from the Korea Tourism Organization, travel agencies, and media, were also invited to share the latest tourism benefits. As a gesture of appreciation, attendees received “Fong Luso,” a cherished Taiwanese souvenir.
The Director-General of the Taiwan Ministry of Transportation’s Tourism Bureau unveiled the “Accelerated Plan for Attracting International Tourists” with the goal of welcoming 6 million international visitors to Taiwan in 2023. The bureau extended a warm welcome to visitors from travel agencies and individual travelers by offering preferential policies. Under the slogan “I’m Taiwan-satisfied,” the bureau aims to foster enthusiasm for traveling to Taiwan by actively promoting its unique attributes, such as exquisite cuisine, eco-friendly lifestyle, and natural beauty. As part of the event, the Director-General officially announced the appointment of the Taiwan Tourism Ambassador for the Korean market in 2023. Renowned actor “Wi Ha-jun,” who recently starred in a highly acclaimed Korean drama series, expressed his excitement about visiting Taiwan at the end of June to shoot a promotional video. Anticipation is high for an unforgettable encounter with actor Wi Ha-jun in Taiwan.
Continuing their efforts to boost Taiwan’s popularity in Korea, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau has planned a roadshow on June 17th in Seoul’s vibrant Hongdae district, renowned for its youthful artistic energy. The event aims to captivate the younger generation by showcasing Taiwan’s distinctive features. Attendees will have the opportunity to savor Taiwanese sandwiches, Fong Luso, mango beer, and KaVaLan whisky. Outdoor activities will include virtual reality bicycle experiences, neon sign DIY workshops, silk printing experiences, a performance by the Taiwanese band “Liu Sheng Ji,” and a cocktail show by Bar Mood. Additionally, to cater to the preferences of Korean youths, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau Seoul Office organized a “Dance Challenge” event featuring the adorable mascot “Osong.” The bureau hopes to create an engaging experience for Seoul residents by offering various incentives, including a chance for two lucky winners to receive round-trip air tickets between Taiwan and Korea.
With these initiatives, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau is dedicated to further strengthening the connection between Taiwan and Korea while providing Korean travelers with memorable experiences in Taiwan.

Embarking on an Extraordinary Odyssey: Unveiling Korea’s Hidden Island Gems
As we ventured beyond the bustling streets of Seoul, we discovered a realm of enchantment that lay concealed among the emerald waters of the Yellow Sea. Our journey to the islands off Korea’s coast transcended ordinary travel, immersing us in a tapestry of awe-inspiring landscapes, captivating traditions, and unforgettable moments. Let me take you on a vivid expedition, where every step unveiled the beauty and charm of Korea’s lesser-known islands.
Our passage to the islands commenced aboard the KTX express train, whisking us away from the city’s vibrant rhythm. With each passing mile, the urban landscape transformed into rolling hills and quaint towns. Finally, Mokpo emerged, an inviting port city nestled on the fringes of the East Sea. From the train station, we embarked on a short taxi ride, destined for the Mokpo passenger marine terminal—a gateway to our island escapades.
But let me impart a word of caution—reaching these hidden gems can be as capricious as the sea itself. The journey to Hong Do, our primary destination, depends on the whims of nature. It’s a land where tempestuous weather can thwart the most intrepid explorers, demanding reverence for the elements. We had carefully timed our trip for late spring, aware of the unpredictable nature of sea conditions, which added an exhilarating sense of anticipation to our adventure.
Boarding the sleek and modern catamaran, we were immediately confronted by the untamed vigor of the Yellow Sea. As the vessel surged forward, battling meter-high waves, a symphony of exhilaration and mild discomfort coursed through us. Sea legs were tested, but as we docked at the pier, the jubilant embrace of cool, salty air rejuvenated our spirits and reaffirmed the indomitable allure of exploration.
Hong Do unveiled itself as a haven of tranquility—an island steeped in the ebb and flow of fishing and the gentle rhythms of tourism. Its idyllic shores were adorned with local businesses, each embracing the authenticity and charm of Korean island life. Our humble abode, a traditional Korean-style hotel, welcomed us with open arms. The simplicity of the small room, complete with a cozy Yo floor mat and warm quilts, provided solace after a day of exhilaration.
As dusk gracefully descended upon the island, we set out to immerse ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of the local village. The pier came alive, teeming with skilled divers reaping the ocean’s bounty, while nearby, bars, dance clubs, and karaoke venues whispered promises of mirthful evenings. These unassuming establishments, tailored for the discerning Korean clientele, epitomized the authenticity and unpretentious allure of Hong Do. Nightfall settled, and we drifted into peaceful slumber, embraced by the island’s gentle whispers.
The following day beckoned us to explore further, and we set foot on the shores of neighboring islands. Beaches, adorned not with the usual grains of sand, but instead with millions of smooth, rounded stones, evoked a sense of wonder. Warning signs, cautioning against taking these natural treasures, seemed trivial against the vast expanse of nature’s artistry.
Navigating the islands on foot, we discovered hidden paths leading us to verdant parks and captivating sights. The aroma of freshly prepared fish and rice wafted through the air, as local restaurants beckoned us to indulge in the island’s gastronomic delights. Each meal, a testament to the simplicity and flavors of Korean cuisine, left us longing for more, even as we savored every delectable bite. The islanders’ commitment to preserving culinary tradition elevated each dish to a symphony of tastes and textures, a testament to their enduring love for the sea.
Our journey continued, as we bid farewell to Hong Do and set sail for Hooksan Do—another island awaiting our arrival. This larger, more vibrant locale pulsated with life, boasting a waterfront adorned with charismatic bars, delectable restaurants, and inviting coffee shops. It was a testament to the islands’ remarkable diversity, where each stop unraveled unique facets of Korean island culture.
A captivating ferry ride later, we found ourselves on the shores of Bigeum Do—a grand tapestry of nature’s magnificence, where captivating vistas unfolded at every turn. The boat ride treated us to a mesmerizing tableau of coastal splendor, a breathtaking panorama showcasing the islands that dot this wondrous archipelago. As dusk settled, we sought refuge in a more modern Korean-style hotel, marveling at the island’s fusion of tradition and contemporary charm.
The following day, a captivating tour awaited us—an exploration of Bigeum Do’s most renowned treasure, the heart-shaped bay. Standing upon the specially designed viewing stands, we gazed upon the harmonious union of land and sea, capturing the memory in a photograph that still adorns our home. Nourished by fish and rice dishes, lovingly prepared by humble mom-and-pop establishments, we reveled in the island’s bountiful offerings.
Alas, the time to bid farewell arrived, and we embarked on the final leg of our journey—the return to Mokpo. Aboard the car ferry, we ascended to the open passenger deck, serenaded by the gentle lapping of waves against the vessel’s hull. The ferry’s grandeur, combined with the route navigating between countless islands, bestowed upon us a tranquil voyage, where we succumbed to the soothing embrace of the sea, surrendering to restful slumber before Mokpo’s embrace once again.
In Mokpo, an insatiable craving led me on a quest for a hamburger, a respite from the delightful but persistent fish and rice. Satisfied, we made our way back to the train station, memories of the islands etched deeply within us, as we embarked on the journey back to Seoul.
Our odyssey to Korea’s hidden island gems left an indelible mark upon our souls. The islands revealed a realm of rugged beauty, a testament to nature’s artistry and the enduring spirit of island life. Taiwan highlighted its diverse tourism offerings, including cruises, railways, and art festivals, showcasing its attractive ports, natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Taiwan expressed the hope that more Korean travel industry professionals would develop and expand tourism products in Taiwan, attracting a greater number of Korean tourists and allowing them to delve deeper into Taiwan’s beauty.

By offering competitive fares and a range of high-quality services, the airline aims to attract a diverse clientele, catering to both budget-conscious travelers and those seeking superior comfort and convenience.
“Our goal is to provide a unique and unparalleled flying experience to our customers,” said a spokesperson for Air Premia. “We believe that by offering affordable luxury, innovative cabin designs, and state-of-the-art inflight entertainment, we can redefine the expectations of air travel.”
In addition to its existing routes, Air Premia plans to expand its network of long-haul destinations, including major cities in North America and Europe. By capitalizing on the growing demand for international travel and the trend of expanding long-haul routes, Air Premia aims to achieve its ambitious revenue targets while providing seamless connectivity options to its passengers.
Customer satisfaction lies at the heart of Air Premia’s growth strategy. Air India 173 takes the North Pole route, which would save around 90 minutes, making the travel time around 15.5 hours. This route includes flying over Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, the Arctic Ocean, Canada, and then entering the US.
In a recent incident that unfolded on Air India Flight 173, an emergency landing in Siberia has sparked a heated discussion about the airline’s priorities. As passengers endured the ordeal of the unexpected landing, questions have arisen regarding the importance of investing in the airline’s workforce before focusing on aircraft upgrades.
On a fateful day, Flight 173, en route to San Francisco, experienced engine troubles, necessitating an immediate emergency landing in a remote region of Siberia. Passengers found themselves stranded in an unfamiliar Russian village Magadan, facing the challenges of limited resources and uncertain circumstances. However, it was the behavior and attitude of the Air India crew during this trying time that drew significant attention and concern.
Reports emerged of instances of unprofessionalism, lack of empathy, and inadequate communication from certain crew members. Passengers, already anxious and distressed, felt let down by the airline’s representatives, questioning the airline’s commitment to their well-being. Such incidents highlight the need for Air India to address the attitude and behavior of its crew members.
In the wake of this incident, Air India’s new ownership, one of the biggest conglomerates in India, Tata along with their recent announcement of a substantial investment in the airline, comes under scrutiny. While the plan to purchase 470 airliners, equivalent to a significant amount of USD 70 billion, is commendable, it raises questions about whether additional investment should be directed towards improving the airline’s overall services and training its ground and flight crew.
Recognizing the seriousness of the crew attitude issue, Air India has vowed to take immediate action. An extensive investigation will be launched to address the behavior of the crew involved, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be implemented. Moreover, Air India has committed to introducing a comprehensive re-education program focused on professionalism, customer service, and crisis management. The aim is to instill a customer-centric culture within the airline, ensuring that all crew members adhere to the highest standards.
Air India’s incident in Siberia serves as a wake-up call for the airline to reevaluate its priorities. While investing in aircraft upgrades is undoubtedly essential, it should not overshadow the need to invest in the people who are the face of the airline. By prioritizing crew training, improving communication skills, and fostering a culture of empathy, Air India can rebuild passenger trust and confidence.
Air India remains dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable travel experience for its passengers. The airline extends its sincere apologies to those affected by the crew’s attitude and assures the public that lessons will be learned from this incident. Air India aims to create a positive and customer-focused environment, ensuring that every passenger receives the level of service they deserve.
As Air India progresses with its investigation and implements corrective measures, it is committed to continuous improvement in crew attitude and service standards. Through collective efforts, the airline aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and regain the trust of its valued passengers.
In conclusion, the incident in Siberia has prompted Air India to reflect on the importance of investing in its workforce. While the recent investment in aircraft is significant, focusing on the crew’s attitude and behavior should also be prioritized. By doing so, Air India can create a positive travel experience and pave the way for a successful future.
Osaka Castle is a flatland castle. The first defensive barrier of Osaka Castle, constructed on a slightly elevated hill, is a moat surrounding the castle. At first glance, it seems impossible to attack the castle, with its seemingly impenetrable walls and a deep moat guarding it. The Tokugawa family, who successfully captured the impregnable Osaka Castle, enjoyed 265 years of glory.
The cherry blossom is the symbol of Osaka Castle. In Japan, cherry blossoms signify the end of winter and the arrival of spring, and they beautifully adorn the surroundings of Osaka Castle, as if draping it with a delicate silk veil.
It has been a month since the conclusion of SITF2023 (Seoul International Travel Fair) held in Seoul. The 38th installment of the annual event took place from May 4th to 7th, 2023, at COEX C Hall in Samsung-dong, Seoul. Since its inception in 1996, SITF (previously called KOTFA) has continuously played a crucial role in the development of the international tourism industry and fostering exchange between countries.
Unlike previous years when the fair was held in June, SITF2023 took place in early May. While the event organizer, KOTFA, did not specify the reasons for the change, it is speculated that it was done to support travel agencies and related companies that faced restrictions for the past 3 years and 4 months due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The fair aimed to provide them with a prime opportunity for a strong comeback as international travel begins to reopen.
Reviews of SITF2023 are crucial for its ongoing role in revitalizing the international tourism industry, especially as it currently stands as the sole international travel fair held in Seoul since the suspension of the HanaTour Travel Expo. Despite the noticeable decline in scale compared to pre-pandemic times, the participation of over 150 diverse companies from more than 40 countries is a substantial accomplishment, considering the challenging circumstances faced by government tourism agencies, airlines, travel agencies, hotels, and other travel-related organizations and companies over the past three years.
We express our gratitude to the government tourism authorities, hotels, and travel agencies that invested significant resources and actively participated in SITF2023, even during difficult times.
Regular attendees of SITF2023, such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Guam, were present. Notably, three Central Asian countries, namely Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, which have shown great interest in the Korean travel market in recent years, actively engaged in promotional activities.
The Director of the Malta Tourism Board, Mr. Endo Singo, who is passionate about pioneering the Korean market, was busy communicating with visitors and conducting business consultations. Similarly, the Mongolian booth, consisting of a large delegation including a traditional dance troupe and musicians, was bustling with visitors throughout the fair.
The director, Ms. Amia Jovanovic-Desir, passionately promoted Seychelles, leaving no time to spare
One of the most eye-catching booths at SITF2023 was the booth representing Seychelles, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean. The director, Ms. Amia Jovanovic-Desir, passionately promoted Seychelles, leaving no time to spare. We look forward to the continued efforts of Seychelles in gaining greater recognition among Korean travelers.
Notably, some countries that usually held a significant presence were absent. Surprisingly, Japan, which has actively valued the Korean tourism market and has an established Korean office and organization, did not participate. Perhaps they considered that they were doing well enough without the need for promotion during the reopening period. Additionally, Georgia, which used to send large delegations for many years, did not participate. Georgia likely made the decision not to participate due to limited returns compared to the investment cost.
Similarly, the U.S. Tourism Authority used to choose to participate in the HanaTour Travel Expo instead of SITF, which had coincided with a similar period until it was not suspended, and did not join the Seoul event this time as well. It is possible that preconceived notions or biases influenced their decision.
The absence of Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and other major players in the tourism industry who had been actively marketing in the Korean market for a while was also notable.
Ms. Zoe Kuo from the Taiwan Tourism Bureau Seoul
In this year’s SITF2023, there were several notable individuals. Apart from Amia, the director of Seychelles that I mentioned earlier, there were also Mr. Endo from Malta and Mr. Zhang Ruoyu, the director of the China National Tourism Office Seoul as well as Ms. Zoe Kuo from the Taiwan Tourism Bureau Seoul.
The directors of tourism boards actively and energetically engaged in the fair, spending most of the four-day event at their booths, attending to the visitors. It was the first time I witnessed such active and lively participation from tourism board directors at SITF. In the booths of other participating countries like Hong Kong and Macau, it was rare to have the opportunity to meet the promotional representatives, probably due to their busy schedules.
SITF2023 follows a trade fair format. Exhibitors showcase and promote their products while also making sales. Visitors come to see the exhibits, enjoy the displays, and even make purchases of the appealing products. However, SITF has been a slightly different approach. It was almost impossible to directly sell non-tangible travel offerings to the visitors, not to mention the language barrier that exists.
This aspect has been a major source of dissatisfaction for the organizations and companies participating in SITF (previously KOTFA), as they have invested significant costs. Consequently, the organizing organization KOTFA has separately prepared B2B seminars and B2B tabletop meetings to address this issue.
Organizing B2B seminars and tabletop meetings was not held this year due to several challenges. As the travel market has collapsed during the pandemic periods, concerns about the participation of travel agencies were uncertain. However, from next year onwards, it will be essential to include such small-scale events like the Travel Mart B2B seminars.
Another area requiring improvement is the lack of a media room for interviews. The noise from continuous events within the exhibition hall makes it difficult to conduct meaningful interviews, and video interviews were impossible. It is necessary to secure a separate room to facilitate video interviews and recordings.
One of the remarkable achievements by the organizing company, KOTFA, is the successful establishment of a comprehensive website. The website’s content and format were excellent. However, it is unfortunate that the KOTFA Daily News is still only available offline. Additionally, pre-event promotion was inadequate, and there was insufficient interest in post-event media coverage, which also needs improvement.
Many friends in the world tourism industry often inquire, ‘What are your thoughts on participating in SITF? Can it yield favorable outcomes?’ The response remains consistent: ‘Undoubtedly, but it requires thorough pre-event preparations. Clear objectives must be established, and the results should be measurable. Furthermore, it is crucial to craft press releases both before and after the event to ensure awareness of your participation. These fundamental practices are essential. If one expects success without adhering to these basics, then participation may not be advisable.'”
It has been a month since SITF2023 concluded, but there has been no contact or email received from any of the participants or organizers. Networking is one of the main reasons for participating in such events. Handing out brochures, exchanging business cards, and manning the booth are not the end of the job. The most important thing is to maintain and develop relationships. That is the key to success.
