노들섬을 ‘세계 평화’의 예술섬으로

노들섬의 건축가 토마스 헤더윅에게 보내는 편지

미스터 헤더윅! 우선 축하드립니다.

당신의 작품이 ‘노들 글로벌 예술섬 국제 지명 설계공모’ 최종 당선작에 선정된 것을. 나는 작년에 어렴풋이 노들섬의 주인공은 당신이 되지않을까 생각했었습니다. 작년에 진행된 노들섬 국제디자인공모전에서 당신의 작품 ‘소리풍경’을 본 후로, 그리고 작년 8월 ‘문화역 서울284’에서 개최된 ‘헤더윅스튜디오- 감성을 빚다’ 전시회를 본 후로는 그 예감이 더욱 더 짙어졌었죠.

공모전에 참가한 모든 건축가들의 작품이 하나같이 혁신적이고 아름다웠지만, 당신의 작품은 그런 예상을 하기에 충분했었죠. 멋진 한강의 아름다움을 획일적인 콘크리트 구조물에 뺏겨버린 불쌍한 서울시민들에겐 축복과도 같은 제안이었습니다.

어쩌면 축하는 당신에게 보낼 일이 아니라 몇년 후 당신의 아름다운 작품을 향유하게될 서울시민들에게 보내야할 지도 모르겠군요.

미스터 헤더윅! 그러나 며칠전 결정된 최종 선정의 결과를 두고 한강을 사랑하고, 아름다운 건축을 사랑하는 서울시민의 한 사람으로서 설레임과 함께 당신께 드리고 싶은 몇 가지 우려가 있어 감히 그 말을 조심스레 꺼내보려 합니다.

첫째, 뉴욕 리틀 아일랜드와의 유사성에 대한 우려입니다.

나도 작년에 당신의 작품을 보고 먼저 리틀 아일랜드를 떠올렸습니다. 그것은 아마 무엇보다 공중에 떠있는 건축물이라는 유사성에서 그런 인상을 받았을 겁니다. 그러나 이번에 당신의 열정적인 PT롤 보고 그 우려는 거의 사라졌습니다. 공중에 떠있다는 구조적인 부분만 비슷하지 두 프로젝트는 당신의 말대로 소재성, 물질성 등에서 완전히 다른 프로젝트니까요.

오히려 역동성이나 건축미에서 리틀 아일랜드보다는 노들섬 아이디어가 훨씬 더 뛰어나다는 것을 나는 확신할 수 있었습니다. 그러나 여기에서도 끝까지 주의해야할 점은 있는 것 같습니다. 건축의 수용자들은 첫인상을 보고 평가하지, 당신의 프리젠테이션을 보고 평가하지는 않는다는 사실을 말이죠.

둘째, 예산의 문제입니다.

작년에 당신은 당신의 작품 ‘소리풍경’을 구현하는데 1조 3천억이 필요하다고 했습니다. 그러나 이번에 결정된 노들 글로벌 예술섬의 예산은 3,400억입니다. 당신은 당신의 오리지널 아이디어를 축소하여 서울시의 예산에 맞추려고 노력하였지만, 이 예산이라는 굴레가 당신의 천재성을 심각히 훼손시키키지는 않을까 심히 우려되는 부분입니다.

그렇다면 솔직하게 서울시에게 건설의 기간을 늘려서라도 서울시가 더 많은 예산을 확보할 수 있게 하는 방법은 없는걸까요? 물론 이것은 서울시에게 해야할 질문이지만 말입니다. 서울시민들이라면 누구나 예산의 굴레에 얽매어 당신의 반쪽짜리 아이디어를 보는 것보다는 노들섬을 세계적인 명소로 만들기 위해 예산을 더 들여서라도 당신의 온전한 천재성을 갖고싶은 마음일 것입니다.

셋째, 컨셉의 문제입니다.

당신의 최종 당선작의 컨셉은 ‘소리풍경’입니다. 한국의 전통음악에서 세계의 젊은이들을 사로잡는 K-POP의 열풍까지 한국의 소리를 비주얼라이즈화한 것이 소리풍경이겠죠. 멋진 컨셉입니다. 그러나 나는 당신에게 한가지 제안을 하려 합니다. Seoul은 최근 Seoul의 도시 아이덴티티를 My Soul, Seoul 로 바꿨습니다. Soul과 Seoul이라는 단어의 라임이 주는 멋진 슬로건이죠.

미스터 헤더윅! 당신이 생각하는 서울의 Soul, 즉 서울이 세계인에게 줄 수 있는 정신적 가치는 무엇이라고 생각합니까? 나는 감히 그것을 평화(Peace)라고 생각하고 싶습니다. 대한민국은 5천년의 역사 중 수많은 외침을 당해왔습니다. 가장 최근엔 36년간의 일본의 식민지배에 이르기까지 말이죠.

당신은 인정할 지 모르겠지만 대한민국은 2차 세계대전 후 당신의 나라 영국을 비롯한 제국주의의 식민지로 있다가 독립한 100여개가 넘는 신생 독립국 중 유일하게 선진국이 된 나라입니다. 더우기 1950년에는 북한의 남침에 의해 온 나라가 파괴되고 이 노들섬 위를 지나는 한강대교와 바로 옆의 한강철교도 처참하게 폭파되었었죠. 이 폐허에서 일군 서울의 기적을 세계인들은 한강의 기적이라고 부릅니다.

미스터 헤더윅! 서울이 세계인에게 줄 수 있는 Soul이 평화라면 이제 그 한강에서 마지막 남은 아름다운 장소인 노들섬을 장식할 소리풍경이라는 컨셉에 이 Peace의 정신을 담아줄 수는 없는지요? 그래서 세계인이 헤더윅의 노들섬을 떠올릴 때, 그리고 서울을 떠올릴 때 그냥 ‘글로벌 예술섬’이 아니라 세계유일의 ‘평화의 예술섬’을 떠올릴 수 있게 말이죠.

예술섬이라 주장하는 곳은 많습니다. 가까운 일본의 나오시마도 그렇고 한국의 여수에 있는 장도도 그렇고 가파도도 그렇습니다. 모두다 일본의 나오시마를 따라가려는 사례들이죠. 그래서 나는 노들섬의 아이덴티티는 성공사례를 따라가는 Me Too의 예술섬이 아니라 세계에서 유일하게 서울만이 낼 수 있는 One & Only의 ‘평화’의 예술섬이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

영국은 세계인에게 ‘민주’라는 정신적 가치를 선물했습니다. 그래서 사람들은 ‘영국’하면 그 민주주의를 상징하는 국회의사당과 빅벤을 떠올리죠. 프랑스는 세계인에게 ‘평등’이라는 가치를, 미국은 세계인에게 ‘자유’라는 가치를 선사했고 그래서 그 상징물들인 에펠탑과 자유의 여신상이 그 나라의 랜드마크가 될 수 있었던 것입니다.

미스터 헤더윅! 당신이 생각하기엔 별로 많지도 않은 예산의 노들섬 프로젝트에 너무 큰 욕심을 낸다고 생각할 지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 이것은 이 멋진 한강의 뷰를 성냥갑 같은 아파트에 다 뺏겨버린 서울시민의 절규와도 같은 호소라고 생각해주세요.

노들섬은 당신도 인정했듯 마지막 남은 한강의 보석같은 공간입니다. 여기에 세워지는 당신의 건축물이 만약 서울이, 아니 대한민국이 세계인에게 줄 수 있는 정신적 가치인 ‘평화’의 상징이 된다면 나는 그것은 3,400억원의 프로젝트가 아니라 돈으로 따질 수 없는 또 하나의 인류문화유산이 되리라 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

당신은 프리젠테이션에서 이렇게 우리를 흥분시켰습니다. ‘우리는 하나의 건축물을 만들려는 것이 아니다’라구요. 맞습니다. 노들섬에 들어서는 당신의 건축물이 또 하나의 콘트리트 구조물이 아니라 서울시민, 나아가 세계인들에게 ‘평화’라는 영감을 주는 정신의 진원지가 되기를 빌어 봅니다.

세이셀의 숨은 보석 라디그 섬

세이셸엔 섬 전체가 자연 보호 구역으로 지정된 곳이 있는데 면적은 10km2, 인구는 2,000명으로 프라 슬랭 섬 동쪽에 위치하며 주민의 대부분은 라파스(La Passe) 마을과 라 레위니옹(La Réunion) 마을에 거주하는 라디그 섬이 그곳이다.

오바마 대통령의 휴양지로 알려지기도 한 이곳은 윌리엄 왕세손, 베컴 부부가 오붓하게 또 화려하게 휴양하는 곳이기도 하다.

해발 333m 고도의 원시림 트레킹으로 라디그 섬의 투어를 시작했다. 자전거를 타고 가다 중간에 자전거를 놓고 네 데굴 산을 약 3 시간 남짓 가파르게 오르내리며 트레킹을 했는데 다소 지치고 목이 마를 즈음 산 중턱에서 내려다보이는 바다 풍경은 잠깐의 휴식으로도 충분했다. 그리고 트레킹 코스 중간중간 고급 진 레스토랑들이 있어 인도양을 바라보며 즐기는 한 끼의 식사는 트레킹으로 지친 심신을 단번에 충전시켰다.

또한 세계에서 가장 희귀한 새로 국제 자연 보존 연맹에서 선정한 멸종 위기의 동물 중 하나인 검은 꼬리 깃털을 가진 토종 딱새 뵈브가 라디그 섬에 서식 중이다. 타카마카 나무를 좋아해 이곳에 서식하는데 우리는 트레킹 중 아쉽게 마주치진 못했으나 대신 세계에서 가장 큰 알다 브라 자이언트 거북이를 이곳에서 만날 수 있었다. 300kg의 육중한 무게로 대략 100~200살을 살고 있는 거북이는 사람들의 손길도 마다하지 않고 고령자답게 모든 것들이 너그럽다.

라디그 섬엔 트래블러지가 선정한 세계 1위의 가장 아름다운 해변 앙세 소스다종이 있다. 영화 캐스트 어웨이에서 톰 행크스가 무인도에 홀로 떨어져 아름다운 풍경 안에서 절망으로 몸부림치던 그 장면들이 바로 이곳에 펼쳐져 있다.

기묘하고 신비로운 느낌을 잔뜩 품은 화강암 바위들이 실로 거대하고 웅장한 자태로 해변에 즐비하다. 카약을 타고 앙세 소스 다종을 향했다. 깊지 않은 푸른 바다 위를 카악 행렬이 보트에 의지해 살랑이며 태양 아래 한참이다. 발아래로 하얀 산호초들과 알록달록한 열대어들이 잡힐 듯 스치고 지나간다.

얼마나 지났을까 태양 아래 각양각색의 모양으로 빚어 놓은 듯한 바위들이 펼쳐졌다. 거친 부분 하나 없이 매끈하게 다듬어 놓은 듯한 모습은 실로 장관이다. 자연의 솜씨라고는 상상할 수 없을 만큼 신비롭다. 아니 자연의 솜씨이기 때문에 더 없이 신비로운 거겠지..

사람이 다녀간 흔적이 느껴지지 않을 만큼 해변의 자태는 자연 그대로의 모습을 여과 없이 보여준다. 파도를 따라 움직이며 뛰 노는 아이와 바위 사이에 보이지 않게 누워 일광욕을 즐기는 사람들을 마주치지 못했다면 정말 깜빡 속을 뻔했다. 무수한 시간 동안 다녀간 사람들의 흔적은 대자연 속에선 무의미했다. 우린 그대로 원시시대에 와 있었다.

라디그 섬은 세이셸의 보석과 같은 곳이다. 가공되지 않은 원석 그대로 반짝이고 있었다. 문명이 흠집을 내어 번듯하게 만들 이유조차 찾기 어려울 만큼 자연이 주인인 그곳. 그래서 사람들이 잠시 잠깐 그곳에서 그 아름다움에 동화되어 인간 사회로 돌아가 다시 숨 쉬고 살수 있게 한다. 그걸 힐링이라고 말하던가?^^

라디그 섬은 자전거가 일상이고 급하지 않다면 뚜벅이가 다반사인 곳. 자연과 하나 된 섬 주민들은 그런 일상에 위험요소마저 당연히 자연의 일부로 알고 사는 듯 보이지 마 우리가 흔히 보는 자전거 도로라고 생각하면 위험천만이다.

경계가 분명하여 사람과 자전거가 분리된 도로가 아니고 자전거와 사람 그리고 가끔씩 다니는 자동차가 모두 한길로 다녀 사고 위험이 종종 있다. 게다 도로 교통법에 대한 숙지가 없는 외국인은 자전거를 타고 달리다 차가 달려오면 그 자리에 멈춰 서서 차가 먼저 가기를 기다려야 하는 라디그 섬만의 교통법을 준수해야 하는데 문제는 도로가 좁아 멈추어 서는 것이 위태롭게 느껴진다. 라디그 섬의 본연의 의지는 외국인에겐 익숙지가 않다.

그래도 여전히 세이셸은 굉장히 매력적이고 힐링의 대명사 같은 곳이다. 그 열흘 간의 시간 동안 마치 다른 차원의 우주를 다녀온 듯 경이로운 시간을 선물받았다.

꿈같은 시간은 늘 언제나 순간으로 사라지고 일상으로 돌아온 지금 눈을 감을 때마다 나는 여전히 세이셸을 향한다.

희귀한 야자수로 가득한 프랄린 섬엔 에덴의 동산이 있었다.

20명 남짓 2열로 블록처럼 끼워 앉아야 탈수 있는 작은 경비행기를 타고 도착한 곳은 세에 셀의 두 번째로 큰 프랄린 섬. 우린 곧바로 발리드 메 (Valle de Mai) 국립공원으로 향했다.

1972년 유네스코가 선정한 세계문화유산인 이곳 발리드 메엔 희귀한 야자나무들이 가득하다.

숨만 쉬어도 건강해질 것 같은 이곳은 세계문화유산 지정 30주년 기념으로 2013년에 타임캡슐을 설치했고 60주년이 되는 2043년 12월 9일에 타임캡슐을 오픈 계획을 가지고 있다고 한다.

가이드의 안내를 따라 야자나무가 즐비한 숲길을 따라 걷는데 이곳의 유명한 타카마카럼이 바로 이곳에서 자라는 타카 마카 나무로 만들어진다며 설명을 해준다. 후에 럼을 만드는 곳을 방문하여 설명을 들었는데 럼은 전 세계에서 이곳만이 가진 비옥한 황토가 키운 사탕수수를 정제해서 만든 후 위스키처럼 그럼을 저장해 숙성시키는 나무 통이 타카 마카가 아닌가 짐작해 본다. 타가 마카 잎을 예전엔 지붕으로도 사용되었으나 지금은 사용하지 않고 단단한 나무는 가구로 사용된다.

발리드 메에 가장 주목할 만한 나무가 있는데 바로 코코드 메 ( coco de mer)라는 세상에서 가장 섹시한 나무 열매가 열리는 나무가 바로 이곳에 있다. 전 세계에서 이곳에서만 자라는 독특한 나무는 암나무와 숫 나무로 누구라도 눈으로 바로 알 수 있는 열매 모양으로 단연코 신기하고 묘하게 성스럽다.

코코드메는 평균 250년을 산다고 한다. 이곳에 암나무 700그루 숫나무 800그루가 있다.

암나무는 태초의 여성 이브의 하반신을 꼭 빼닮았고 숫나무는 아담의 심벌이라 불리는데 그 크기들이 경이로울 만큼 거대하고 신비롭다. 암나무의 열매는 그 무게가 25kg에 달하며 대략 7년 정도 되면 바닥으로 떨어지는데 그때 그것을 먹을 수 있다고 한다.

그 안은 코코넛 같은 것들과 거대한 씨앗이 채워져 있는데 그 가격이 대략 3000불에 달한다고 한다. 하지만 그 열매를 사서 가지고 나올 수 없다는 것에 주의해야 한다 먹고 난 겉껍질만 들고나올 수 있다고 하는데 그 이유는 그 안의 씨앗이 반출되는 것을 막기 위함이라고. 아주 오래전 대륙이 하나였다가 5개 대륙으로 나뉘었는데 그때 당시 이 지역에만 살던 코코드 메가 살고 있던 곳에서 튕겨져 나와 지금의 프랄린 섬이 되었다고 한다. 그래서 코코 드메는 이곳에서만 오롯이 성장하고 있고 그것을 보존하기 위해 자연의 순리를 기반으로 지켜 나가고 있다고 한다.

숫 나무의 긴 심벌엔 하얀색 꽃들이 피어나는데 바람이나 도마뱀들에 의해 암나무의 두 주먹만 한 열매가 때맞춰 살짝 벌어졌을 때 꽃들이 암나무의 열매에 운 좋게 착상해야 하는 기묘한 자연의 점지가 있어야 이브의 아름다운 심벌을 볼 수 있다고 한다.. 역시 생명의 조화는 마치 설계된 듯 모든 것들이 시스템화되어 절로 흐른다. 인간의 영역은 분명 아니다.

이곳엔 코코드 메만 있는 것이 아니라 넛맥, 바닐라 등등의 나무들도 함께 공존한다. 숲을 따라 걷다 보면 군데군데 나무들이 쓰러져 있고 그 사이로 조그만 개울들이 있는데 그 물들이 나무들을 살리고 또 흘러 흘러 국립공원 바깥의 폭포수가 된다고 한다. 이곳은 죽은 나무들을 전혀 손대지 않고 스스로 그 안에서 생명이 태어나고 또 죽고를 반복하는 자연 순환의 이치를 그대로 따르고 있다.

자연이 스스로를 돌보며 살아가고 있는 것이다. 인간은 거기에 아주 조금의 역할을 하거나 그나마도 못한 행위들로 자연은 고통스럽다.

프랄린의 코코 드메 호텔은 마치 자연과 하나된 느낌의 리조트다. 밤바다가 불어주는 바람을 머릿결 사이로 감미롭게 느끼며 달빛 아래 조그마한 등 하나를 사이에 두고 한낮의 뜨거웠던 태양 아래 달궈질 대로 달궈진 상태를 여유 있게 식히며 음식을 먹었는지 바람이 실어다 주는 기분 좋은 향기를 머금고 있었는지 프랄린의 밤은 마냥 행복하다.

이튿날 작은 배를 타고 해상국립공원으로 향했고 가는 중간에 에메랄드빛 바다 한가운데 잠시 정박해 스노클링을 할 수 있도록 해 주었다. 푸른 바닷속엔 열대어들이 이미 우리들의 출현이 익숙한 듯 손이 닿을듯한 거리를 유지해 주었고 백색 산호들이 그 아래에 즐비했다.

엘니뇨 현상으로 산호의 90여 프로가 고사해 아름답던 산호섬은 어느새 옛이야기가 되었지만 자연은 늘 그래왔듯 스스로 살고 스스로 때맞춰 사라진다. 살고 죽는 것은 현상일 뿐 여전히 이곳 프랄린은 뜨겁게 아름답다.

프랄린의 서쪽으로 가면 다양한 식물군과 동물군들이 서식하고 있는데 특히 뿌리가 위로 계속 자라 여러 갈래의 줄기 모양으로 형성된 맹그로브 군락지가 즐비한 곳들이 있다. 우리는 길을 따라 걸으며 물길을 따라 서식하고 있는 맹그로브의 역사를 보듯 크고 작은 맹그로브를 감탄하며 바라보았고 그 외에 타카 마카, 코코드 메도 복습하듯 발견하는 기쁨을 가졌다.

세이셸에서의 시간들은 우리를 어린아이처럼 해맑은 정서로 다시 되돌아오게 한다.

세이셸 사람들의 눈망울이 유독 똘망똘망하고 생기 넘치는 이유가 자연이 주는 모든 것들을 잘 수용하고 순응하며 살기 때문은 아닐까? 왜냐하면 다른 선진국에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 복화술의 달인들처럼 마음 안에 또 다른 나를 발견하기가 어렵기 때문이다.

에어비앤비 공모전 통해 선정된 ‘기상천외한 숙소’, 이제 플랫폼에서 예약 가능

(여행레저신문) 2022년 6월, 에어비앤비는 전 세계 디자이너와 건축가를 비롯하여 다양한 아이디어를 가진 수만 명의 사람들의 가장 멋지고 영리하며 창의적인 숙소 아이디어를 공모전을 통해 모집했다. 에어비앤비는 아이디어를 직접 검토하여 100명을 선정했으며, 각각의 지원자가 숙소 아이디어를 실현할 수 있도록 10만 달러(한화 약 1억 3천만 원)를 지급했다.

이 공모전을 통해 에어비앤비에 등록된 예약 가능한 숙소와 호스트의 소감을 소개한다.

1. 아비 A. 님의 코코헛(태국, 매탱)

열정을 타고난 사람이든 간단한 휴지 낙서로 창의성을 발전시킨 사람이든, 지원자들은 모두 하나의 공통점을 가지고 있었다. 바로 창의적인 아이디어를 실현하기 위해 온 힘을 기울인다는 점이었다. 코코헛이란 이름의 숙소를 내놓은 호스트 아비 님은 공모전 참여를 위해 보낸 지난 1년 간에 대해 ‘놀라운 여정’이었다고 말하며, 그동안 많이 배우고 성장했다고 했다. “숙소를 완성하는 데 수많은 작업이 필요했습니다. 연못을 파고, 길을 만드는 것도 모자라 대나무 가구 만드는 법까지 배우는 등 다양한 일을 했죠. 휴지 조각의 낙서에서 시작해 이렇게 다양한 작업을 완료한 결과 울타리, 수영장, 수도 및 전기 시스템을 갖춘 숙소가 탄생했습니다. 모든 것을 하나로 연결해야 이렇게 농장에 집을 지을 수 있더군요.”

2. 에스테반 A. 님의 특별한 열대우림 벌집 숙소(코스타리카, 포코솔)

에스테반 님은 디자인이나 건축에 대한 사전 지식 없이 이 여정에 뛰어들었다. 그럼에도 특별한 열대우림 벌집 숙소의 꿈을 실현하기 위해 최선을 다했다. “사실 기상천외한 숙소 공모전에 지원하면서도 걱정을 좀 했는데요, 디자인이나 건축에 대한 배경지식이 없는 제가 당선되어서 깜짝 놀랐어요. 오늘 밤, 저는 이 커다란 벌집 숙소에서 호스팅 약속을 지키게 되었습니다. 1년간 모든 일이 도전과 같았고, 믿음이 흔들릴 때 마다 굳게 다지며 상당한 위험을 감수해야 했지만, 이제 그동안의 노력이 이렇게 완성되어 정말 감사한 마음뿐입니다.”

3. 휘트니 H. 님의 화분(미국 아이다호, 벌리)

기상천외한 숙소 건축은 창의적인 콘셉트를 기반으로 야심 차게 완성해 나가는 프로젝트인 만큼 화분 모양의 숙소를 만든 호스트 휘트니 님처럼 건축 과정에서 어려움을 겪은 호스트가 많지만, 휘트니 님은 장애물보다는 아이디어 실현에 대한 열정이 더욱 컸다. “드디어 저희 숙소를 세상에 선보이게 되어 정말 기쁩니다! 숙소의 규모도 크지만, 무엇보다 아래로 갈수록 가늘어지는 모양을 만들어 내는 일이 쉽지 않았습니다. 건축 난이도가 높아 수십 명의 계약 업자들이 공사를 그만두어야 한다고 말할 정도였어요. 그래도 저희는 이 숙소가 게스트와 지역사회에 놀라운 경험을 선사할 수 있을 것이라 생각하여 포기하지 않았습니다. 숙소가 자리 잡은 이 땅은 돌아가신 저희 할아버지께서 경작을 하시던 곳이었어요. 작은 시골 마을인 아이다호에 이런 기상천외한 숙소가 생길 수 있다는 사실을 다른 사람들에게 직접 보여준 것에 할아버지가 자랑스러워하시지 않을까 싶어요.”

4. 티머시 H. 님의 버블 숙소(호주, 아그네스)

경주와 교토

천 년 고도(高都)라면서 두 도시를 자주 비교한다.
한국 사람들이 특히 비교하고 싶어한다.

그런데 관광 인프라 면에서 이 비교는 오히려 부끄러움을 불러일으킨다. 도대체 오래 된 도읍이었다는 것 말고 경주가 무슨 매력이 있느냐 말이다. 지난해와 올해 경주 두 번, 교토 두번 다녀오면서 느낀 단상의 결론이다.

박물관도 유적도 많고, 음식점도 많다고 우길 수 있지만 경주는 관광 의욕을 꺾는 도시일 뿐이다. 공공기관에 의해 획일적으로 조성된 관광지에서 뭔가 대단한 것을 기대한다는 게 애초부터 무리였다. 비싼 KTX 타고 내려가 렌트카 빌리고 괜찮은 숙소에 머무는 코스를 고집하지 않더라도 경주는 관광비용이 많이 드는 도시다.

공공 교통망은 한참만에 오는 버스나 택시밖에 없으니 하루에 움직여서 볼 수 있는 관광지가 많지 않다. 괜찮은 공연장, 백화점, 마켓, 갤러리, 음식점도 없거나 충분치 않은데다 가격은 웬만하면 서울 강남 일대의 값을 넘어선다. 황리단길을 다녀보아도 손내밀어 사고싶은 물건도 없고, 가로수도 없는 땡볕 아래에서 특색 없는 상점들만 보다 금세 지치기 일쑤다. 밤에 즐길 문화도 별로 없다. 저녁만 먹으면 숙소로 찾아들어가게 된다.

여행지에 대한 인상은 다음에 다시 가고 싶은지 아닌지로 평가한다. 지금의 경주라면 다시 방문하고픈 매력이 없다. 그런데 교토는 몇 번 가도 자꾸 궁금하다. 우리보다 좀더 나아보이는 그 부분들이 무엇인지 알고 싶고, 배우고 싶고 흉내내고 싶게 만든다.

Seoul Selects 99 Trainees for Medical Tourism Interpreting Coordinator Program

Seoul City, in collaboration with the Seoul Tourism Organization, has announced the launch of the “2024-2026 Seoul Medical Tourism Interpreting Coordinator” program, aimed at enhancing the quality of care for foreign patients and bolstering Seoul’s position in the global medical tourism market.

The role of a “Seoul Medical Tourism Interpreting Coordinator” encompasses vital responsibilities such as medical interpretation, medical tourism consultation, and marketing support for foreign patients seeking medical services in Seoul. These highly skilled professionals play a critical role in attracting and managing international patients within medical facilities.

The recruitment period for the “Seoul Medical Tourism Interpreting Professional Training Course” garnered significant interest from individuals aspiring to join the medical tourism industry. Over a span of three weeks, from May 16th to June 4th, a total of 326 applicants competed for the opportunity to be part of this prestigious program, showcasing the industry’s enthusiasm for revitalizing the medical tourism ecosystem.

After a rigorous selection process, 99 trainees were chosen to participate in the program. Notably, approximately 40% of the selected candidates possess language proficiency not only in English, Chinese, and Japanese but also in languages such as Mongolian, Russian, and Vietnamese. This diverse linguistic capability positions Seoul to cater to the specific needs of foreign patients from various countries.

The trainees will undergo an intensive training program organized by the Seoul Tourism Organization, starting in September. Successful completion of the course will grant them official recognition as Interpreting Coordinators designated by Seoul City. Over the course of three years, they will be responsible for coordinating medical interpretation services and actively engaging in medical tourism-related activities.

To obtain certification, trainees must fulfill the required training hours and pass the final examination. Under the sweltering heat, every living creature seemed to struggle, gasping for breath, as if caught in a never-ending race against time. Memories of the refreshing spring days were swiftly overshadowed by the relentless blaze that engulfed the world.

In the midst of June, as the threshold of autumn beckoned on the far side of the globe, I received a message that would change the course of my life: “Your journey to India awaits.”

There was an inherent mystique in the name itself—India—a place that had captivated my imagination for so long. It whispered promises of enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and profound self-discovery. Although the prospect of embarking on this adventure excited me, doubts crept into my mind like shadows creeping across a desolate landscape. Could I endure such a harsh climate? Could I truly experience the essence of India under such scorching temperatures?

Pushing aside my momentary hesitation, I mustered my resolve and replied, “Very well. When shall we depart?” The response came swiftly, “The itinerary will commence in early July.”

The kind-hearted advice I received informed me that the average temperature would reach 38 degrees, with scorching highs of 42-43 degrees. Instead of deterrence, an odd exhilaration took root in my heart. It was as if the promise of this challenging journey stirred a peculiar thrill within me, reminding me of the depths of my own longing and the vulnerability of my spirit.

“Should anyone wish to join me, please speak up. I will cover the expenses, minimizing the financial burden to just the round-trip airfare.”

While the idea of embarking on a solitary expedition often appealed to me, this particular journey held a unique significance. It entwined a pilgrimage to sacred Buddhist sites with a cultural exploration of the enigmatic Indian landscape. Thus, I felt compelled to seek companionship for this extraordinary venture.

Fate seemed to conspire in my favor, for I already had two potential fellow travelers in mind. A monk, whose serene presence had touched the depths of my soul, and a fellow believer with whom I shared a profound spiritual connection at the temple. Together, we resolved to set forth on this unforgettable expedition, our hearts intertwined with hope, uncertainty, and a shared yearning for transformation.

The preparations for our journey commenced in customary fashion—validating passports, securing airline tickets, and ensuring the presence of a trusty credit card. A modest sum of emergency funds found their place amidst my belongings. A day before our departure, I diligently gathered the essentials, performing the ritual of packing my bag akin to a well-practiced routine.

As much as I yearned to indulge in the convenience of instant meals—astonishingly advanced in their development—I firmly resisted the temptation. To embark on a journey meant to immerse oneself in a foreign culture, one must willingly embrace the local cuisine, savoring it joyfully, even if it did not align with familiar tastes. How else could I truly experience the vibrant tapestry of Indian culture?

If I were to encounter pungent spices or unfamiliar condiments, I resolved to approach each meal with gratitude. Rather than resisting or recoiling from the flavors, I sought to appreciate the rich history and deep-rooted traditions imbued within every dish. Traveling with preconceived notions about food would be akin to donning a protective suit, shielding myself from the very essence of exploration.

With my bag neatly packed, containing only the bare essentials—my meager belongings and camera—I stood on the precipice of the unknown. As I completed the departure formalities and settled into my seat, neatly arranged by the gate, a sudden surge of emotions flooded my being. Doubts and uncertainties collided with an overwhelming sense of anticipation. What lay beyond the horizon? What connections and destinies awaited me in the land of ancient traditions and timeless wisdom?

My heart ached with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, much like the delicate dance of a pendulum, forever oscillating between extremes. Little did I know that this journey, beyond the realm of a mere physical pilgrimage, would unravel the very essence of my being.

Looking ahead, the data from the first quarter of 2023 aligns with UNWTO’s projections for the year, anticipating international arrivals to recover between 80% and 95% of pre-pandemic levels. The UNWTO Panel of Experts expressed confidence in a strong peak season from May to August in the Northern Hemisphere.

While the tourism industry’s recovery faces challenges, such as the economic situation and geopolitical tensions, the promising data from the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer demonstrates that the global tourism industry is well on its way to a full recovery.
