Sunder Nursery, Delhi’s Heritage Park of Monuments, Lakes and Gardens
Sunder Nursery is one of Delhi’s most distinctive heritage parks, bringing together nature, architecture, culture and public space within a single historic landscape. Located beside Humayun’s Tomb, the park offers a calm contrast to the surrounding city, with restored monuments, tree-lined paths, gardens and lakes spread across its grounds.
Time magazine included Sunder Nursery in its list of the World’s 100 Greatest Places in 2018, recognising the park as an important example of heritage conservation and urban renewal. Its appeal lies not in one landmark alone, but in the way historic structures and carefully planned natural spaces have been connected into a broader cultural landscape.
Visitors can explore six World Heritage monuments, more than 300 species of trees, landscaped lakes and open spaces used for cultural performances and community events. The park is also home to around 80 species of birds, making it an important green habitat in the heart of Delhi as well as a popular destination for walking, photography and quiet recreation.
Sunder Nursery opened to the public in 2018 after a decade-long conservation and landscape project led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The work followed a 2007 agreement with the Government of India and focused on restoring monuments, improving the surrounding ecology and creating an accessible public park.
Today, Sunder Nursery stands as more than a collection of gardens and historic buildings. It is a place where Delhi’s architectural heritage, natural environment and contemporary cultural life meet, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the city beyond its better-known monuments.
