New Zealand Winter Brings Skiers Back to Whakapapa Ski Area
July marks the heart of the New Zealand winter, drawing skiers and snowboarders from around the world to the country’s snow-covered mountains. On New Zealand’s North Island, Whakapapa Ski Area is one of the best-known winter sports destinations, spreading across the volcanic slopes of Mount Ruapehu.
Whakapapa offers broad ski terrain, dramatic alpine scenery and views shaped by the rugged volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park. The combination of snow-covered slopes and the distinctive Mount Ruapehu environment gives skiing in New Zealand a character quite different from that of many Northern Hemisphere resorts.
This photograph shows Whakapapa Ski Area during a previous New Zealand winter. Skiers can be seen enjoying the open slopes beneath the mountain’s striking volcanic ridges, capturing the appeal of winter travel on the North Island.
Expectations are building for another snowy season at Whakapapa. Forecasts of strong winter snowfall have raised hopes among local skiers, international visitors and tourism businesses preparing for the New Zealand ski season. As snow continues to settle on Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa Ski Area is once again becoming a focal point for travellers seeking skiing, snowboarding and alpine scenery during a cold July in New Zealand.
